I'm sick and I have an exam at RSU: What do I do?

It's normal, and even expected to be sick at least once during your medical studies when you have an exam or colloquium. Maybe you think you need to go anyway. But I can't stress this enough: do not go to an exam sick

You don't want to risk your own health first of all. Secondly, you might get someone else sick, who will have to miss an exam because of it. It is always better to skip the exam and do it in the retake.

What do I do?

  1. Be in touch with your professor/lecturer. Email them with your RSU email, explain the situation and ask them when retaking will be possible. Usually, they will direct you to where you can find retake dates and sign up. Sometimes, some teachers might have some groups that haven't done the colloquium yet and they may propose you take the colloquium with them.
  2. Get a sick note. Go to a clinic, or the RSU ambulance and get a sick note. Usually, you can just go to a clinic, explain your symptoms and request a sick note for RSU. They will provide you with one always.
  3. Submit the sick note via myRSU. If you haven't read my blog post on how to do that yet, read it here. You can also watch my step-by-step YouTube tutorial here.

Will I lose an attempt?

As long as you get a sick note validated, you will not lose an attempt. You will have all 3 attempts remaining.

You might feel tempted to just show up to the colloquium anyway in order to not go through the trouble, but remember this:
  1. You will most likely do worse than you would normally, since you're sick.
  2. You may get someone else sick, and they might have to skip a colloquium because of that

Flu season is no joke, and we don't wanna spread around any viruses...

My experience

In my first year, I got sick within a few weeks of starting university. It must have been something in the air here (or all the partying during orientation week), but I got a really tough flu, which refused to leave. Every time I thought I was healthy, it came back. I was in this cycle of getting sick, getting healthy, and getting sick again. That must have gone on for two months.

Came time for my anatomy and latin colloquium. They were on the same day, and on that day I was very ill. So, I emailed my latin professor and my anatomy professor (though you should email your practical teacher, not the DemoLab professor):

This is my email to the anatomy professor:

I received a reply:

So the retake dates for the theoretical colloquium would be published in the e-studies later. The date for the practical retake would just be agreed upon with my practical teacher. She ended up just telling me I can do it whenever I want when I'm back, after class.

And this is the email to the latin teacher:

This is the reply:

So she suggested I can retake the colloquium two days later with other groups, but unfortunately I was still very ill, and couldn't make it to these dates. Retake dates were then later uploaded to e-studies, where I could sign up for a date that fit me!

Retakes are the same as any regular colloquiums. You bring your student ID and pen (if needed). If you want to read more about colloquiums, check out these blog posts:
